Background

Founded in 1953 by Jean-Joseph Riverin and a group of businessmen and builders from Chicoutimi, QC, Inter-Cité Construction started out by specializing in hot mix asphalt and road work. From its modest beginnings that included paving projects in the Lac Saint-Jean region, Inter-Cité gradually became one of Quebec’s leaders in the hot mix asphalt industry. In 1975, the company was awarded the first paving contract for the road to James Bay. During that year, it produced and laid down 440,000 metric tons of hot mix asphalt. Inter-Cité expanded into Quebec City and Sept-Îles at the end of the 1980s by purchasing the assets of Sablière Drapeau, Construction Québec-Labrador and Construction Napoléon Brochu. That expansion gave the company an excellent base in Eastern Quebec with various quarries and sand pits in the Quebec City, Saguenay/Lac Saint-Jean and North Shore regions. It was during that period that the Riverin family completed the buyout of the other shareholders.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Groupe Riverin re-entered the earthwork and civil engineering market after 20 years of absence (Inter-Cité and its subsidiaries were assigned to develop that market). The company naturally focused on road construction projects but its expertise soon expanded to include sewer and water supply systems, road structure projects and mass earthwork. Hydroelectric project work was added at the beginning of the new millennium. Producing aggregate and granular material by using crushing or screening processes has always been an integral part of Inter-Cité’s operations, while snow removal operations remain a complement to the company’s hot mix asphalt business.

As the new millennium progressed, the Inter-Cité team enhanced its expertise in drilling and blasting by integrating the personnel and equipment from Dynamitage Lac-Saint-Jean.

Today, Inter-Cité has the capacity to produce and lay down 400,000 metric tons of hot mix asphalt, crush 1.5 million metric tons of stone on various sites, remove snow from over 600 km of roads, move 3.5 million cubic metres of excavated material, pour more than 25,000 cubic metres of concrete, and drill and blast 2 million cubic metres of rock on an annual basis. The company employs up to 450 people during peak season and has over 500 pieces of equipment. By 2005, it was the seventh largest contractor in Quebec based on the number of hours worked. At Inter-Cité, we firmly believe that our personnel are our most valuable resource and are the key to the company's success. The photos in this brochure show the extent of the work done by Inter-Cité, which is always on the lookout for major new challenges.
